C200 Conference champions courage, humility and change

In Key Biscayne, FL during the weekend of November 2, 2017, hundreds of powerful women in leadership gathered in one location for one purpose: to share stories of growing pains and success while empowering women through all walks of life to become pioneers in business.

The vision of C200 is exactly that: to be the preeminent global organization for women business leaders, publicly recognized for making a profound impact on the advancement of women in business.

The theme of this years’ conference was “Business and Beyond: Celebrating & Enriching Lives.” Common discussions surrounded courage, humility and change—all chocked full of empowerment and inspiration. Courage is everywhere—but women still have work to do. According to Million Women Mentors, women make up 50% of the workforce, yet women are 24% of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) workforce. And the number is declining—but Million Women Mentors is working vigorously to change that.

Mel Robbins, CEO of Power of You and keynote speaker at the conference, explained “you think to change anything, you have to do something huge. It comes down to a 5 second decision. When you trust your instincts because you were called to do it, things open up. If you count backwards, it requires focus and a different part of our brains. 5-4-3-2-1. Push yourself outside your comfort zone.” Now that’s a powerful statement. What’s holding us back from taking risks?

Many of the women I encountered at the conference were the first women in leadership roles from President to CEO. Two women shared their stories about courage and change, and I learned that even though things in your business may seem bleak or unsurmountable and you think you’ve lost it, there’s insight to be gained for how to fix it.

Panelists and moderators graced the stage and shared stories of hardship and success – like Angie Bastian, founder of Angie’s Artisan Treats and known for her tasty popcorn, BOOMCHICKAPOP. She discussed the challenges of scaling your business and how to transition from “grassroots bootstrapping to early stage business development.”

At Clarifire, it’s part of our culture to promote thought leadership and collaboration. Our conference rooms are full of huddles at any given moment throughout the day. By attending conferences like these, I’m able to bring back some ideas and knowledge to share with my teams back in the office. There’s so much opportunity for us to learn how others were able to rebrand and reinvent their companies—from changing channels to even changing the name of the company altogether.

One of my favorite events throughout the weekend was the Luminary Luncheon, where four women were recognized for their unparalleled success and who have changed the face of business. From working in the food industry to helping veterans and military families, these women shared tales of their journey while providing comfort for women business pioneers.

Perhaps the greatest message of all was the encouragement and support from other women in the same boat as me—women who have worked hard to do what they love. I can’t wait for next year!
